Two people (Bruce, Katurah; Kaleb, Sabiyah; Austin, Sifu) must run across the deck of the ship and unload a crate full of sandbags and ropes, then pile it all on a table, eventually digging out a key. Then two more people (Julie, J.Maya; Brandon, Sean; Kellie, Jake) must jump off, swim out to a boat, paddle it back (retrieving another key). Then the final two people must use the keys to unlock two poles, using them to retrieve the tribe's flint from an overhead corkscrew. Results: Brandon struggles getting back on the boat, setting Lulu back, but they recover. Eventually, Reba wins. They get their flint, and a machete and pot back at camp. Kaleb, Sabiyah volunteer to do Sweat vs Savvy for Lulu, Brando and Jake for Belo. They're taken away on a boat.
In a twist, Sweat vs. Savvy is no longer a choice, but rather now a two-part hero challenge, with the tribes competing head-to-head in pairs (Sabiyah, Kaleb vs. Brando, Jake). First pair to finish in the time limit gets their flint/pot/machete. First part: Move a pile of 40 logs, one at a time (per person) 200 feet across the beach. Second part: Remove the flint from a complicated ropes-and-ring puzzle. Both complete the log task, but neither tribe finishes the puzzle within the time limit, so nobody wins.
Ep1 Hero RC: "Sweat vs. Savvy" - Lulu, Belo both lose.
Day 2
(April 18)
Ep.1 advantage: Austin
Upon arriving at their camp after their RC win, the Reba tribe notices odd lettering on their camp sign around the "Reba" plaque, but it's unintelligible. The next say, after Sifu has attracted attention with extensive time hunting for idols, Austin happens upon a package sitting on a tree branch on the beach. It is, of course, a Beware Advantage, which he opens. It tells him it's a series of clues to the idol, but he has lost his vote until he retrieves the idol. The first step gives him a parchment that completes the clue by combining it with the letters on Reba's sign. He's not shown completing this task, but he understands how it works almost immediately.
One at a time, contestants must go up a ramp, down a slide into a mud pit, then crawl through to a mat, then collectively haul a huge bag of coconuts. Then two people (Kaleb, Sabiyah; Kendra, Bruce; Austin, Sifu) must toss coconuts into a hanging basket until it's heavy enough to drop a box containing keys. They must take the keys, climb a ramp to a tall tower, then two more people (Brando, Kellie; J., Drew; Emily, Brandon) use the keys to unlock and solve a logo puzzle. Belo wins, Reba is close behind, Lulu struggles again, is late to the puzzle, loses. (Not shown: Belo also wins the chance to send someone to Lulu to observe the pre-Tribal scrambling, they pick Kendra.)
On Day 4, in order to keep an eye on Emily, Lulu decides to search for idols in pairs. Eventually Brandon finds their Beware Advantage package (with Sabiyah). Not wanting to risk his vote, he hands it off to Sabiyah, who uses the clue (matching a hole in the parchment to the tribe map) to identify the correct tree. She doesn't find it on Day 4, but the next day (after the IC), she, Kaleb, and Sean look again, and Sabiyah notices an out-of-place coconut and vine. Chopping through the vine releases the idol package, which ... is a candle that must be melted in fire to release the idol. Since Lulu has no flint, she can't do that, and loses her vote, despite holding the idol.
Later on Day 4, boats arrive at each camp, and Bruce (rock-paper-scissors), Drew (rock-paper-scissors), and Brandon (volunteer/consensus) attend. After discussing camp life, they separate to three stations, where they must match pairs of tiles, leaving three unmatched tiles that contain numbers, which can be arranged to solve a combination lock. If they can finish this in three minutes, they win an advantage. If they fail, they lose their vote. Bruce opts out. Drew opens the lock, and receives Safety Without Power. Brandon mismatches one pair of tiles, has one number wrong, and can't open his lock. He loses his vote.
Katurah, Sifu sit out. Three people per tribe must swim, climb a two-tier dock, jump off and smash a plate with a club, releasing a key, then swim the key to a balance beam, cross it, then swim it to a dock. When all three keys are there, two people (Brandon, Sabiyah; Brando, Kellie; Drew, Julie) must unlock and solve a giant coral puzzle. The puzzle is a tight race between Reba and Belo. Reba wins by a mere second, gets a big fishing kit. Belo gets a smaller one. Lulu loses.
Jake, Bruce; J., Drew sit out. Four contestants start on a platform in the water, go to shore, then one at a time, toss a ball into an overhead track, go through a high-step obstacle, and catch it. Once all four balls are caught, one person (?, Kendra, Austin) tosses one ball to raise a target, into which one person (Kaleb, Austin, Kendra) must toss three rings. Winner gets large fruit basket, second gets smaller fruit plate. Winner also gets to pick one person to send to one of the other tribes for a camp raid (1 item). Kaleb lands all three for Lulu, and Lulu wins! Austin nabs second for Reba. Rings landed: Kaleb-3 (Lulu wins before either other tribe lands one); Austin-2; Brando-1; Austin-3 (Reba 2nd). Lulu picks Kaleb to raid, he takes Reba's fishing gear.
Ep3 RC: "Running Down a Dream" - Lulu wins, Reba 2nd.
Ep.3 advantage: Drew
While Kaleb is raiding Reba's camp, he takes each person aside individually to chat, because he was given a "Goodwill Advantage" that he had to give to someone on the tribe. It allows the bearer to restore a vote that has been lost. Knowing Brandon lost his vote on the Ep2 journey, Kaleb gives fellow journey-er Drew the advantage (although Drew admits he instead won advantage).
After two full days of digging, even recruiting Drew, Dee, and Julie to the efforts, Dee (and Julie) finally find what's at "fallen palm tree X". It's a rope tied to a hammer, which tells them to break a rock near the well. They hand the hammer to Austin, who finds the correct rock, opens the idol ... only to find it's an extremely nerfed idol, good only for one Tribal. That is unless he sacrifices his vote (which he now can, if he uses Drew's advantage). That will extend the lifespan until all live on one beach (the fake merge). A second sacrificed vote will extend it until F5. Hooray?
Dee, Julie; Kellie, Brando sit out. Tribes must move a cart along a course, collecting two keys (Austin, Kendra, Sean). They must use the keys to unlock heavy puzzle pieces, which they haul on their cart. They must then disassemble the cart, take it through a barricade, reassemble, and get to the end. Finally, solve the puzzle. Belo first to puzzle, then Lulu, then Reba. Emilu, Kendra, J. call their respective puzzles. Reba wins, Belo second. Lulu loses once again.
Ep3 IC: "Draggin' the Dragon" - Reba wins, Belo 2nd.
TC3 - Sabiyah voted out (2-1), 15 left.
Day 8
(April 24)
Ep.4 tribe swap
The three tribes arrive at what appears to be a challenge site, and Reba and Belo express their dismay at Sabiyah's boot. Then Probst tells everyone to drop their buffs, because for the first time in the new era, there's a full tribe swap. Everyone draws buffs from the same tray, and the new tribes are revealed: New Reba is mostly old Reba (Dee, J., Julie, Sifu) plus Sean. New Lulu is mostly old Belo (Bruce, Jake, Katurah, Kellie) plus Kaleb. New Belo is an even mix, with Austin and Drew coming over from Reba, Brando and Kendra staying blue, and Emily joining from Lulu.
The new tribes of five must swim to a cage, climb into it, then use two long poles to carry the (very heavy) cage up to the beach, to a right-angle barrier. Once there, they must dig under the cage in the sand, and one person (Kellie, Brando, Julie) must crawl through, out of the cage. They then untie three basketballs that they'll rebound, while one person (Kaleb, Austin, Sifu/Dee) at a time must shoot three baskets from inside the cage. Baskets landed: Kaleb-3 (Lulu wins!), Austin-2, Sifu-2, Austin-3 (Belo is second!). New Reba loses.
Emily, Kellie sit out. One at a time, three people per tribe must race through a massive three-level obstacle course, collecting three bags of keys, in order. Then one person (Julie, Jake, Drew) must untie the bags to find a key that opens a lock to release a hook, which they then use to dump a set of sandbags. The tribe must put them all in a bin, then one at a time, the first three must shoot the sandbags at three targets, each knocking down one. Targets hit: J.-1 (Reba 1), Dee-1 (R2), Bruce-1 (Lulu 1), Sifu-1 (Reba 3; wins), Katurah-1 (L2), Kaleb-1 (Lulu 3; 2nd place). No targets for Belo. Reba wins 10 fresh fish plus cooking items; Lulu wins 5 fish. (Plus immunity, and Reba picks J., Austin, Kellie for a journey,
J., Austin, Kellie arrive at their journey site, hike up the hill, and on the summit discover a choice: Sustenance (sandwiches) or Strategy (three Amulet Advantages, as seen in 42, Ep.1). Austin (whose tribe lost the IC and didn't get any fish, but also who sees the amulets as the target they are) votes for sandwiches. J. pushes for the amulets. Kellie is undecided, and doesn't want to be the one who makes the decision. Eventually Austin relents, and lets everyone take the amulets, although he clearly isn't happy (in confessional) about the result.
Kaleb leads all of Lulu (except Katurah) on a search of the area where Sabiyah found her idol. Bruce quickly finds the Beware package, and opens it with little hesitation, despite the merge being imminent. It directs him to dig up an idol buried under the middle of their shelter. He manages to dig for a while with no success while Katurah is away. Then the merge note comes, he races back to finish, and digs up the idol. It's a full idol, good to final 5, with no vote sacrifices needed for full power.
As in every new era season, it's not a normal merge, but rather everyone living on one beach with no buffs. Belo and Lulu both move in at old Reba camp. Hoorah.
Random draw for teams: Red (Kaleb, Emily, Dee, J., Jake, Kellie) vs. blue (Drew, Austin, Sifu, Julie, Bruce, Kendra). Katurah draws the gray rock, must pick one team to bet on. She picks the most obvious team ever, in blue. One at a time, players must go through a muddy net crawl. Once all are through, they must roll a heavy cart over obstacles, picking up sandbags at two stations along the way. At the end of the course, they must pile more sandbags on a cart to climb a tower. Once all are up, they untie keys, go down a net obstacle, then climb, via a large boulder, a second tower. Once all there, they unlock a block puzzle that has a rebus that gives them the answer to a four-word puzzle (SAFELY MOVING FORWARD TONIGHT). Results: Blue takes a huge lead, the rebus/puzzle (Drew/Austin; J./Jake) is painfully easy and doesn't slow them down at all. Julie/Kendra solve the word puzzle quickly, and they win easily. They get a meal, buffs, and immunity. (As does Katurah.)
TC7 - J.Maya voted out (10-1 on revote, after Kaleb's SitD win), 12 left.
Ep7: "The Thorn In My Thumb"
Ep8: "Following a Dead Horse to Water"
Ep9: "Sword of Damocles"
Ep10: "How Am I the Mobster?"
Ep11: "This Game Rips Your Heart Out"
Day 14
(April 30)
Ep.7 RC/IC: Get a Grip
Random draw for teams: Red (Jake, Dee, Austin, Julie, Kaleb, Katurah) vs. Blue (Bruce, Sifu, Kendra, Kellie, Emily, Drew). Winning tribe goes to Tribal second, which matters because person out of first tribe does not make jury. They also go to Sanctuary for food. Order out: B6. Emily, R6. Julie (quickly), B5. Kendra, R5. Jake, B4. Sifu, B3. Bruce, R4. Austin, B2. Drew (Kellie wins for Blue), R3. Kaleb, R2. Katurah (Dee wins for Red). Showdown between Kellie and Dee after 17 minutes. Dee wins!
Contestants spend morning racing for bamboo tubes with their cash inside. Starting amounts: Austin $700; Bruce $80; Dee $900; Drew $520; Emily $500; Jake $340; Julie $420; Katurah $480; Kellie $700; Kendra $360.New rules, person who ends the auction with most cash loses their vote. Also, auction lasts between 6 and 15 rounds, Probst has a tile that says how many, which remains secret. 1. Kendra - pretzels and beer, $360. 2. Kellie - Fries, ketchup, soda - $500. 3. Emily - covered item (charcuterie board) - $440. 4. Dee - Milkshake, $900. 5. Katurah - Covered item, $480 (it's giant fish eyes - she doesn't eat it). (5.5). Austin - buys the fish eyes for $100. 6. Drew - Covered item (Katurah passed up), $520 - it's a bowl of candy. 7. Austin - slice of pizza, $600. 8. Julie -Toothbrush/paste/mouthwash, $420. 9. Jake - Chocolate cake (to be shared w/ 2 others - Julie, Bruce), $340. 10. Kellie - PB&J, chips, margarita, $200. Last item. Bruce has most money ($80, Emily had $60).
Once again, forced sit-outs in exchange for rice. Dee, Emily agree. Probst cuts the rice bag. Drew, Katurah sit out as well. Challenge (as seen in Samoa). Each person must hold up a log holding 1/3 of their pre-game body weight. At regular intervals, they move down to a lower knot on the rope, making it heavier. Results: All reach fourth knot. 6. Kellie (on transition), 5. Kendra. Down to end of rope/no knot: 4. Austin, 3. Jake, 2. Julie, 1. Bruce wins.
Contestants are told in treemail to divide into teams of three: (Blue - Katurah, Austin, Emily), Red - (Dee, Drew, Jake), Yellow (Bruce, Julie, Kendra). One at a time, contestants must balance a ball on a disc while crossing a balance beam. Once all are across, they must dig up two rope rungs in a sand pit. First two teams to do so move on, last is out, AND all lose their votes, must go on a journey. Second stage: Teams must use the rope rungs to build a rope bridge, once all are across, they must land three balls on small rings. First team to finish advances, other is out. Final stage (winning team individual challenge) - It's "This Much" (as seen in Kaoh Rong). Results: Blue out in the first stage, blowing a lead. Second stage: Yellow wins, Jake only person to not land a ball. Final stage: Kendra first out, then Julie. Bruce wins.
Ep9 RC/IC: "Different Stages" - Yellow team, Bruce win.
Ep.9 journey
Austin, Emily, and Katurah hike together, then split up to potentially re-earn their lost votes. The task is a 3-minute math test: Using one minus sign and three plus signs, put them between the digits 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 so that it makes an equation that equals 100. Katurah and Emily struggle, do not solve the equation in time. Austin gets it, and recovers his vote.
Individual RC for a trip to the Sanctuary (and letters from home). Contestants must cross a series of obstacles, collecting a ball along the way. After going under a net, they must maneuver the ball through the table maze from the South Pacific duel, "Puppet Master." First to finish wins an overnight trip to the Sanctuary (with letters from home, announced after the challenge is over). Results: Emily wins! She picks Julie, Katurah, and Dee to join her.
Ep10 RC: "Running on Empty" - Emily wins Sanctuary trip.
Day 19
(May 5)
Ep.10 IC: Invertigo
A water-torture-free, low-budget version of the F4 IC from Fiji. This time, no water, just a ramp, and people hold on to handholds below them, rather than over their heads. At regular intervals, they move down to smaller handholds. Eventually they let go, and slide into the water. Order out: 8. Emily, 7, Katurah (both on second holds), 6. Julie (3rd hold), 5. Dee (4th hold), 4. Drew, 3. Jake, 2. Bruce, 1. Austin wins!
Boat arrives at camp with a note and a bag of rocks on morning 20. One person must go, if more than one wants to, they must draw rocks, and the green rock drawer gets to go. They draw rocks, and it's Emily. She gets to the island, has to hike, then sees it's the Savvy task from the premiere. If she can solve it in the time limit (sand hourglass timer of unknown length), she wins immunity. If not, she loses her vote. Emily chooses the third option: Getting back on the boat, because four people had already failed the task in what was likely more time.
Contestants are tethered to a rope, and must unwrap it from around a cage, cross a series of obstacles, then open a bag, remove sandbags, and toss them to knock a stack of blocks off a table. Then they must use the blocks to build an arched word puzzle (RESOURCEFULNESS) that reads the same on both sides. Results: Austin finishes his puzzle first, but it's only correct on one side. While he's mulling what to do, Drew finishes, and wins. All reach the sandbag stage; the three men are working on the puzzle.
Contestants must race in from the ocean to a barrel. They must stand on the barrel, and use overhead hanging ropes to get themselves through a course, grabbing three keys along the way. Finally, they must solve a five-piece slide puzzle, which one of the keys unlocks. Winner gets a helicopter trip to a picnic on the sand spit. Order to puzzle: Austin, Drew, Jake, Julie, Dee, Katurah. Austin wins! He takes Dee and Katurah.
While Austin, Dee, and Katurah are off on their helicopter reward, Julie and Jake look for idols. Eventually a solo Jake finds a clue in an area similar to where Bruce found his idol. The clue directs Jake to a secret compartment in the tribe raft. He soon finds it, and has an idol good to final five.
Contestants must put one foot on a beam that has a ball on the other end. Last person to still have their ball on their beam wins immunity. Order out: 6. Julie, 5. Jake (under 2 min.), 4. Katurah. [12 min.] 3. Drew. [18+ minutes] 2. Austin, 1. Dee wins!
The contestants wake to a combination lock box on their beach, and learn there are three stations scattered throughout the beach site containing items (coconuts, bamboo, crabs) they must count, then use the totals to unlock the combo lock. First person to do so wins advantage in the upcoming immunity challenge. A wrong guess means they have to go back to at least one station and re-count. Jake gets it correct, using winners from seasons 18, 43, and 25 as a mnemonic device. He gets an advantage.
Contestant must crawl under an obstacle, dig up a machete from a sand pit, use it to chop through a rope, releasing sandbags. Then they must untie knots, and toss sandbags into three nets, revealing three numbers. They must then use those numbers to open a combination lock, releasing a set of three keys, then climb a ramp and use the keys to release the pieces for the three-tiered puzzle Michele kicked in Kaoh Rong. Jake uses his advantage, which gives him two of the three numbers already shown, so he only has to land a sandbag on the closest target. Order to puzzle: Austin, Jake, Katurah, Dee, Julie. 2nd tier: Austin, Jake, Julie. 3rd tier: Austin, Jake. Austin wins! Austin takes Jake with him to the Sanctuary.
It's Operation Balance Build, but the stack is connected to the trip hazard from High Step Back. In this version, the stack of bowls reaches 17, for some reason. Jake and Dee are tied throughout, to 14 bowls, then Jake drops his stack. In his haste to start over, he knocks the trip hazard off its frame, and is told he's out, can't continue. Dee wins.
The final three (Jake, Dee, Austin) face off with each other against the jury's questioning. All three provide fairly compelling cases for winning, but towards the end, Dee clears up that she did indeed tell Julie about her impending doom at F7, instructing her to play her (Austin's) idol for herself, and booting Emily with a single vote. Dee clarifies that Austin did not this until Final Tribal. This probably tips the balance, and Dee wins in a surprisingly close 5-3-0 vote over Austin and Jake, respectively.
