Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains ep 2 detailed future challenge spoilers/ spec
Between the TV Guide Network preview, the "Surviving Survivor" special and the EW.com behind-the-scenes video of the art department Dalton Ross shot, there are several clues about what challenges Heroes vs. Villains may have in store.

Overall, as John Kirhoffer explained, all of the challenges in HvsV are recycled: "We've got the 20 best players from previous seasons, and we've got our 24 best challenges from previous seasons. There's also a couple of challenges we've just done as recently as Tocantins, and even Samoa. There are actually several challenges that nobody here has competed on. We have nobody from Fiji, and I think we have two or three challenges from Fiji."

We noticed that a lot of the previous challenges shown in "Surviving Survivor" appear to be ones that are coming back. So we'll use that as a guide to what may be coming:

Challenges already aired: click to view larger picture
Challenge 1: "Battle Dig"
Originally shown: Survivor 12: Panama - Exile Island, Ep3 IC
Heroes vs. Villains version: Ep1 RC (won by Heroes)
getting dirty
Danielle, pinned
How it works:

Contestants dug up pillows and tried to either race back to get their pillows past their goal lines, or tried to prevent their opponents from doing so.
Challenge 2: "Lock & Load, Light"
Originally shown: Survivor 13: Cook Islands, Ep1 RC/IC
Heroes vs. Villains version: Ep1 IC (won by Villains)
IC boating
Heroes heading back in
How it works:

(1) Six people race over the berms to the beach; (2) assemble the various pieces into a boat; (3) row out and get fire; (4) go back to the beach, race back to the wall with fire and planks; (5) remaining four do another puzzle; (6) put planks on the wall to build a ladder; and (7) the entire tribe climbs the ladder to light a barrel at the top.

But wait, there's more (than enough challenges to fill 24 slots):

Challenge 3: "Slip, Slide & Score"
Originally shown: Survivor 14: Fiji, Ep3 IC
Heroes vs. Villains version: Ep3 RC?
Colby, Heroes
Colby gets ready to slide
How it works:
In its original form, the two Fiji tribes (Ravu and Moto) dove down slip-n-slides, and had to grab a specific numbered ball (randomly assigned), then shoot it into a basket at the end of the course. First tribe to get the ball in the basket got a point, and first tribe to six points won.

Challenge 4: "A Crate Idea"
Originally shown: Survivor 18: Tocantins, Ep3 RC
Heroes vs. Villains version: Ep2 IC
heroes stack
Heroes get stacking
How it works:

Contestants run out in pairs, and roll large cubes back to a stacking area. There, they assemble them into a pyramid-like shape, and everyone climbs to the top and cheers.

Challenge 5: "Schmergen Brawl"
Originally shown: Survivor 19: Samoa, Ep2 RC/IC
Heroes vs. Villains version: Ep2 RC?
schmergen
Losing tribe in Samoa had: Russell
How it works:
Watch and learn (less tuneful CBS video here).

Evidence: cwalton Burnett interview, Survivor.com: "We liked it so much that we brought it back and another person was injured. I won’t say whether it was an evacuation, but there was another major problem. So then that challenge was thrown in the trash. It will never be back."
Challenge 6: "Sumo at Sea" / "Kung Fu Cannibals"
Originally shown: Survivor 10: Palau, Ep4 IC; Survivor 14: Fiji, Ep5 RC
Heroes vs. Villains version: Ep3 IC?
rupert roars
Roaring Rupert
How it works:
In the Fiji version, the contestants faced off in a modified sumo battle, whacking each other with large pillows in an attempt to knock their opponent off the raised platform, and into the (muddy) water. First tribe to seven bout wins won the overall challenge. Chief new wrinkle here: more mud.

Evidence: Surviving Survivor
Challenge 7: "Obstacle Course"
Originally shown: Survivor 1: Borneo, Ep6 IC
Heroes vs. Villains version: ?
borneo
How it works:

CBS site recap: Not much beyond "[a] half-mile run along the military-style obstacle course on the Sand Spit." (Thanks to VolcanicGlass for identifying the challenge).

Evidence: Surviving Survivor
Challenge 8: "Heads Up"
Originally shown: Survivor 10: Palau, Ep2 IC
Heroes vs. Villains version: ?
palau
Winning tribe in Palau had: Tom
Losing tribe had: Stephenie
How it works:
CBS site recap: "Each tribe must swim out to a marker buoy, dive down, find a rope attached to the foot locker, then pull it 50 feet across the ocean floor. The tribes must unlatch the lockers, releasing the mess kits. Each mess kit had a Morse code letter inscribed on it. The first tribe to decipher the Morse code and spell out the mystery word would win."

Evidence: Surviving Survivor
Challenge 9: "Buried Treasure"
Originally shown: Survivor 1: Borneo, Ep4 IC
Heroes vs. Villains version: ?
borneo

Evidence: Surviving Survivor
How it works:
CBS site recap: "The "Buried Treasure" Immunity Challenge foreshadowed Ramona's fate. The combination relay race/treasure hunt required only six competitors from each tribe. As Colleen swam, Greg balanced atop a floating bridge, then rowed with Joel, then passed off to Gervase for his run through the jungle as Gretchen and Jenna began digging for treasure."

(Thanks again to VolcanicGlass for the i.d.).
Challenge 10: "Beach Bash"
Originally shown: Survivor 16: Micronesia-Fans vs. Favorites, Ep3 RC
Heroes vs. Villains version: ?
micronesia
Winning tribe in Micronesia had: Amanda, Parvati, James, Cirie
How it works:
CBS site recap: "Tribes will charge across the lagoon to their own end zone on the opposite side, carrying three heavy canvas bags. The tribe's goal is to get their three bags, plus two bags from the enemy tribe, into their respective end zones. Tribes can steal bags from their opponent's end zones even after the opponent has scored."

Evidence: Surviving Survivor
Challenge 11: "Dragon Dance"
Originally shown: Survivor 15: China, Ep1 IC
Heroes vs. Villains version: ?
china
Winning tribe in China had: James, Amanda, Courtney
How it works:
John Kirhoffer in China: "Once they get to the halfway point, they have to cross a couple of bridges. The guy in the lead, that's carrying the head, will break away and then scale a couple of walls, pulling some pins and dropping some drawbridges. Then they get a key, come back, release the rest of the tribe, get back on with the dragon and race through the swamp."

Evidence: Surviving Survivor
Challenge 12: "The Maze"
Originally shown: Survivor 2: The Australian Outback, Ep5 IC
Heroes vs. Villains version: ?

Winning tribe in Australia had: Colby, Jerri
How it works:
CBS site recap: "Two identical giant mazes stood before the tribes as host Jeff Probst explained the rules: Each tribe, as a unit, must successfully find their way through their maze, collecting medallions in order from one to five. The first tribe to gather all the medallions in order and to exit the maze would win immunity. "

Challenge 13:

Where you have you gone, Jonny Fairplay?
How it works:
CBS site recap: "Hidden on the island across the lagoon are two Individual Immunity Idols, one for each tribe. The first person from each tribe to find the tribe's Idol is safe at the first visit to Tribal Council. Jeff tells them, "You can go anytime you want." After a moment of stunned silence, the two tribes sprint into the water."
Evidence: Surviving Survivor (most likely one shown not be on HvsV, in our opinion).

No players from Vanuatu were harmed during the filming of Heroes vs. Villains
How it works:
CBS site recap: " The castaways first had to go beneath a mud crawl and solve a box maze. Following the box maze, the Survivors must then cross over a very narrow balance beam to light a fire in order to drop a torch. The torch is needed to light a final wok, which would signify the victory, as well as Immunity."

Heroes vs. Villains version: ?
palau
Winning tribe in Palau had: Tom
Losing tribe had: Stephenie

Evidence: Surviving Survivor
How it works:
CBS site recap: "The tribe members would then arrive at a supply dump, where they would gather valuable supplies. The tribes would choose which items they want to race with. The next obstacle was a ten foot wall that the Survivors would need to get themselves and their supplies over. They would then wade through a waist-deep swamp before dropping the supplies on beach mats. The final leg would be an outrigger race on the water to retrieve their tribe flag. The first tribe to cross the finish line with their tribe flag would win Immunity, as well as whatever supplies they had gathered."

Originally shown: Survivor 18: Tocantins, Ep1 RC/IC
Heroes vs. Villains version: ?
tocantins
Winning tribe in Tocantins had: Tyson, Coach
Losing tribe had: JT

Evidence: Surviving Survivor
How it works:
CBS site recap: "Six members of each tribe will race across a series of sand mounds and into the river where they must retrieve a raft loaded with puzzle planks. Once they have the raft back to shore, they will release the puzzle planks by untying the ropes that secure them to the raft. They will then race those puzzle planks back to the start where the two remaining tribe members will use those puzzle planks to build a staircase. Once all tribe members make it to the top, any two tribe members must work together to navigate a peg through a table maze allowing them to release their tribe flag. "

Winning tribe in China had: Amanda, Courtney, James

Evidence: Surviving Survivor
Challenge 20: "Dragged Through the Mud"
Originally shown: Survivor 11: Guatemala, Ep2 IC
Heroes vs. Villains version: ?
guatemala
Losing tribe in Guatemala had: Stephenie
How it works:
CBS site recap: "In an old-fashioned tug of war challenge, the tribes were to be tethered to ropes in a pit of mud. The first tribe to drag the other to their side of the mud pit and grab a flag would win that round. The first tribe with three flags would win Immunity."

Evidence: Surviving Survivor
Challenge 21: "Dragon Rider"
Originally shown: Survivor 15: China, Ep8 IC
Heroes vs. Villains version: ?
china
Winner of this IC in China: Courtney
Losers included: Amanda, James
How it works:
CBS site recap: "The Survivors are to sit and balance on a large barrel attached to a part of a dragon body. The barrel is filled with water and has a leak in it. As the water drains, the barrel becomes more and more unstable, making it increasingly more difficult to balance. When you fall off, you are out of the challenge. The last person remaining wins Immunity."

Originally shown: Survivor 8: All-Stars, Ep5 IC
Heroes vs. Villains version: ?
all-stars
Winning tribe in ASS1 had: Boston Rob, Rupert
Losing tribe had: Colby, Jerri
How it works:
CBS site recap: "They would race across long balance beams in order to retrieve their tribe-colored flags. When two castaways from opposing tribes met in the middle, they would have to battle it out, with the first to fall into the pool of water below losing. The first tribe to get twenty of their flags back to the starting area would win Immunity."

The fruit will be weighed at the end of the challenge and the tribe that manages to collect the most fruit at the end of five minutes wins."

Evidence: Surviving Survivor
Challenge 24: "Cat and Mouse"

Heroes vs. Villains version: ?
all-stars
Winning tribe in Micronesia had: James, Parvati
Losing tribe had: Amanda, Cirie

Evidence: Surviving Survivor
How it works:

CBS site recap: "Tribe members will be divided into pairs and harnessed together. A pair from one tribe will chase a pair from the other tribe through a muddy obstacle course, attempting to grab a flag off the opposing tribe's back. Each time a pursuing pair successfully gets a flag they score a point for their tribe. The chasing pair has only 60 seconds to capture the other tribe’s flag. If they fail to do so, the fleeing tribe scores the point. First tribe to three points wins."
Challenge 25: "Roll With It"
Originally shown: Survivor 19: Samoa, Ep6 RC
Heroes vs. Villains version: ?
all-stars
Winning tribe in Samoa had: Russell

Evidence: Surviving Survivor, EW video
How it works: The final version of the challenge (which was never finished in Samoa) involves one contestant being strapped inside the giant ball, with two other (blindfolded) contestants pushing it. The rolling person has to shout directions to his/her tribemates. After rolling a brief distance, they reach a tilting maze table, in which the (still strapped into the ball) non-blindfolded contestant must then guide the rollers and two more blindfolded tribemates in navigating a ball into a hole in the maze table.

Original version ended with Russell Swan's collapse.
