Survivor:
Heroes vs. Villains ep 2 detailed future challenge
spoilers/ spec |
Between
the TV Guide Network preview, the "Surviving Survivor" special
and the EW.com behind-the-scenes video of the art department
Dalton Ross shot, there are several clues about what challenges
Heroes vs. Villains may have in store.
Overall, as John Kirhoffer explained, all of
the challenges in HvsV are recycled: "We've
got the 20 best players from previous seasons, and we've got
our 24 best challenges from previous seasons. There's also a
couple of challenges we've just done as recently as Tocantins,
and even Samoa. There are actually several challenges
that nobody here has competed on. We have nobody from Fiji, and
I think we have two or three challenges from Fiji."
We noticed that a lot of the previous challenges
shown in "Surviving Survivor" appear to be ones that are coming
back. So we'll use that as a guide to what may be coming:

Challenge
1: "Battle Dig"
Originally shown: Survivor 12: Panama
- Exile Island, Ep3
IC
Heroes vs. Villains version: Ep1
RC (won by Heroes)
Danielle, pinned |
How it works:
Contestants dug up pillows and tried to either race back to get their pillows
past their goal lines, or tried to prevent their opponents from doing so. |
|
Challenge
2: "Lock & Load, Light"
Originally shown: Survivor 13: Cook Islands, Ep1
RC/IC
Heroes vs. Villains version: Ep1
IC (won by Villains)
Heroes heading back in |
How
it works:
(1) Six people race over the berms to the beach;
(2) assemble the various pieces into
a boat; (3) row out and get fire; (4) go
back to the beach, race back to the wall with
fire and planks; (5) remaining four do another
puzzle; (6) put planks on the wall to build
a ladder; and (7) the entire tribe climbs the
ladder to light a barrel at the top. |
|
But wait, there's
more (than enough challenges to fill 24 slots):

Challenge
3: "Slip, Slide & Score"
Originally shown: Survivor 14: Fiji, Ep3
IC
Heroes vs. Villains version: Ep3 RC?
Colby gets ready to slide |
How
it works:
In its original form, the two Fiji tribes
(Ravu and Moto) dove down slip-n-slides,
and had to grab a specific numbered ball
(randomly assigned), then shoot it into a
basket at the end of the course. First tribe
to get the ball in the basket got a point,
and first tribe to six points won.

Challenge
4: "A Crate Idea"
Originally shown: Survivor 18: Tocantins, Ep3
RC
Heroes vs. Villains version: Ep2
IC
Heroes get stacking |
How
it works:
Contestants run out in pairs, and
roll large cubes back to a stacking
area. There, they assemble them
into a pyramid-like shape, and
everyone climbs to the top and
cheers.

Challenge
5: "Schmergen Brawl"
Originally shown: Survivor 19: Samoa, Ep2 RC/IC
Heroes vs. Villains version: Ep2 RC?
Losing tribe in Samoa had: Russell |
How
it works:
Watch and
learn (less tuneful CBS video here).
Evidence: cwalton Burnett interview, Survivor.com:
"We liked it so much that we brought
it back and another person was injured. I won’t
say whether it was an evacuation, but there was
another major problem. So then that challenge
was thrown in the trash. It will never be back." |

Challenge
6: "Sumo at Sea" / "Kung Fu Cannibals"
Originally shown: Survivor 10: Palau, Ep4
IC; Survivor 14: Fiji, Ep5
RC
Heroes vs. Villains version: Ep3
IC?
Roaring Rupert |
How
it works:
In the Fiji version, the contestants faced off in a modified sumo
battle, whacking each other with large pillows in an attempt to knock
their opponent off the raised platform, and into the (muddy) water.
First tribe to seven bout wins won the overall challenge. Chief new
wrinkle here: more mud.

7: "Obstacle Course"
Originally shown: Survivor 1: Borneo, Ep6 IC
Heroes vs. Villains version: ?
|
How
it works:
CBS site recap: Not much beyond "[a] half-mile run along the military-style
obstacle course on the Sand Spit."
(Thanks to VolcanicGlass for identifying the challenge).

"Each tribe must swim out to a marker buoy, dive down, find a rope
attached to the foot locker, then pull it 50 feet across the ocean
floor. The tribes must unlatch the lockers, releasing the
mess kits. Each mess kit had a Morse code letter inscribed on it.
The first tribe to decipher the Morse code and spell out the mystery
word would win."

IC
Heroes vs. Villains version: ?
Evidence: Surviving Survivor
|
How
it works:
CBS site recap: "The "Buried Treasure" Immunity Challenge
foreshadowed Ramona's fate. The combination relay race/treasure hunt
required only six competitors from each tribe. As Colleen swam, Greg
balanced atop a floating bridge, then rowed with Joel, then passed off
to Gervase for his run through the jungle as Gretchen and Jenna began
digging for treasure."
(Thanks again to VolcanicGlass for the i.d.). |

Heroes vs. Villains version: ?
Winning tribe in China had: James, Amanda, Courtney |
How
it works:
John Kirhoffer in China: "Once they get to the halfway
point, they have to cross a couple of bridges. The guy in the lead, that's
carrying the head, will break away and then scale a couple of walls, pulling
some pins and dropping some drawbridges. Then they get a key, come back,
release the rest of the tribe, get back on with the dragon and race through
the swamp."

How

CBS site recap: "Two identical giant mazes stood before the

where they would gather valuable supplies. The tribes would choose which
items they want to race with. The next obstacle was a ten foot wall that
the Survivors would need to get themselves and their supplies over. They
would then wade through a waist-deep swamp before dropping the supplies
on beach mats. The final leg would be an outrigger race on the water to
retrieve their tribe flag. The first tribe to cross the finish line with

with puzzle planks. Once they have the raft back to shore, they will release
the puzzle planks by untying the ropes that secure them to the raft. They
will then race those puzzle planks back to the start where the two remaining
tribe members will use those puzzle planks to build a staircase. Once all
tribe members make it to the top, any two tribe members
must work together to navigate a peg through a table maze allowing them
to release their tribe flag. " |

the water drains, the barrel becomes more and more unstable, making it

wins." |

Originally shown: Survivor 19: Samoa, Ep6
RC
Heroes vs. Villains version: ?
Winning tribe in Samoa had: Russell
Evidence: Surviving Survivor, EW video

How
it works: The final version of the challenge (which was never
finished in Samoa) involves one contestant being strapped inside the
giant ball, with two other (blindfolded) contestants pushing it. The
rolling person has to shout directions to his/her tribemates. After rolling
a brief distance, they reach a tilting maze table, in which the (still
strapped into the ball) non-blindfolded contestant must then guide the
rollers and two more blindfolded tribemates in navigating a ball into
a hole in the maze table.
Original version ended with Russell Swan's
collapse. |
