Contestant-related press and rumors
Date Story Source
January 31, 2003 - From EZ poster SurvivorDoug: "Hello everyone. Well, I work with Dave Johnson and when he came back from the Amazon he certainly did not look skinnier. Dare I say it, he looked heavier that he does in the video clips. I can only take this to mean that he did not make the final four and is possibly voted off early. I'm still pulling for him anyway. Go Dave!" - Survivor Sucks EZ board.
January 15, 2003 - From Daryl Lang's (presumably from Ellicott City, MD) blog: "Of the 16 contestants competing for $1 million on the Survivor: The Amazon TV show, two are from Ellicott City, Md. -- my old stomping ground. One of them is Dave Johnson, who was an Eagle Scout in my scout troop and a friend of mine in high school. I haven't seen or spoken to Dave in almost 5 years, but I'm sure he'll be fun to watch on TV. In high school, Dave was one of those guys who was involved in absolutely every activity, and did well enough at all of them that he was respected, but never so well that he was resented." - Daryl Lang's blog.
January 13, 2003 Manuel Mendoza's pre-game quotes and impressions:
- "Initial impression: Smart, low-key. Distinctions: Enjoys 'frolf,' a combination of Frisbee, golf and 'alcoholic consumption.' Trekked across the country by bicycle, taking only three showers in two months."
- "Who are you? 'You get this stereotypical rocket scientist – big glasses, geeky, anti-social. I just think I have a lot more personality.'"
- "Strategy: 'It's going to be hot. It's going to be dirty. It's going to stressful. You've got to accept that and fight through that and not crack.'"
- Dallas Morning News.
January 11, 2003 - TV Guide (hard copy) quote: "Strategy: 'I won't sell out my integrity.'" - TV Guide.
October 1 , 2001 - Geek cred: He was part of an RPI engineering team that won an award for applications involving machine vision sensors. - Assembly magazine.
September 4, 2001 - Bike trip is written up in RPI newsletter. - RPI newsletter.
August 18, 2001 - Completed an Oregon-to-South Carolina (originally intended to be Georgia) cross-country cycling trek with three college friends. Many pictures along the way. - Friend Aaron Brown's angelfire site.
May, 1999 - Won a pole vault event for RPI at a meet at St. Laurence University. - (Listed as the winner for the previous year).
