| Know
someone who was a contestant on Survivor 16: Micronesia? |
|
|
| Contestant-related press and rumors |
January 5 , 2008: CBS eventually gets around
to putting up their Survivor: Micronesia site,
which includes Yau-Man's marginally updated bio (below):
"Yau-Man SURVIVOR: FIJI
Age: 55
Home Town: Martinez, CA
Occupation: Computer Engineer
Originally from Malaysian Borneo, Yau-Man Chan attended All
Saints Secondary School in Kota Kinabalu. He moved to the
U.S. where he received a Bachelor of Science degree from
Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He went on to receive
his Master of Science degree from the University of California,
Santa Barbara.
Yau-Man Chan is the Chief Technology Officer
for the College of Chemistry at the University of California,
Berkeley. In this position, he manages and runs the information
systems infrastructure for administrative, research and teaching
units of the college. This includes setting up networks,
computers and managing business database systems. He previously
worked designing electronic circuits for scientific instruments
to collect data. He's also been a housepainter, cook and
dishwasher.
Chan enjoys playing table tennis, bicycling, woodworking
and reading. He is a member of the USA Table Tennis Association.
He describes himself as intellectual and contemplative. He
considers himself a natural leader, a good organizer, very
skilled with his hands, very resourceful and feels he possesses
a keen intellect.
Chan currently resides in Martinez, California
with his wife of 24 years, Jennifer. They have two children,
Penelope and Ione. They also have a dog, Tucker, and two
rabbits, Ruby and Cupid. His birth date is August 26, 1952."

January 3, 2008: Entertainment
Weekly (mostly Dalton Ross) handles the cast-release
chores for Survivor: Micronesia. Included is Yau-Man's pre-show
interview and Probst's comments:
"THE RETURNING FAVORITES: YAU-MAN CHAN
AGE: 55
SEASON: Survivor: Fiji
YAU-MAN SAYS: ''Last time, I was able
to play the weak old man under the radar before the merge.
I definitely cannot do that [this time].''
JEFF PROBST SAYS:
''You can't do a favorites season without Yau-Man. He's sort
of the Rudy of this season. He'll be the oldest guy and the
most frail and probably be one of the most popular. Yau-Man's
problem is going to be those things. He's so popular, everyone
there knows that he's popular and well liked, and everybody
knows what happened to him in Fiji. But I think Yau-Man's
going to have to come out and play aggressive. I don't think
he can play that same game of just chopping coconuts and
being everyone's friend."

January 25, 2007: Exciting,
CBS-penned TV ad text:
"Yau-Man Chan is from the jungles of Borneo. He may be
small, but his impact is huge."

January 12, 2007: Officially
revealed as a Survivor: Fiji contestant on CBS's The
Early Show.
Hannah Storm: "Yau-Man Chan, a computer engineer, is the
self-described geek of the group. He hopes not to stand so
much that he's voted off the island."

January 9, 2007: Sucks poster survivorsurvivor corroborates
Yau-Man's alleged participation in Survivor: Fiji:
"hmm.. definitely Yau-Man - definitely.. and no he's no
Cao Boi !!"
And later, perhaps in reference to Yau-Man (or the other older
male contestant), another Sucks poster, Budda
and his Homies, peers into the future:
"Best ever??....Just wait until the geezer wins over America
and takes over the title of "Best Castaway Ever"...probably
a guy who spews nothing but common sense...something that not
many castaways have shown since the show's inception."

December 17, 2006: Jeff
Probst's voiceover from the Survivor: Fiji preview
(replete with actual contestant photos, as far as we know)
that aired during the Survivor: Cook Islands reunion
show:
"Coming in the new year... Survivor turns the
tables on two tribes, as one lives the life of luxury, while
the other is left with virtually nothing. For the first time,
there will be 19 new Survivors. This diverse
cast, with lifestyles ranging from a Harvard-educated
lawyer to a once-homeless street performer, will be
forced to battle each other more fiercely than ever before.
Crawling with thousands of deadly sea snakes, Exile Island
will be more treacherous than ever. This time, two
immunity idols and a twist will drastically complicate the
game. And one of the most controversial decisions ever
made by a Survivor will have America talking. Who will outwit,
outplay and outlast all the others? Join us next time, for
the premiere of Survivor: Fiji."

December 9, 2006: Newbie02 gives
some post-game updates on Yau-Man:
"Yau-Man is actually a very nice guy. He's back to work
on Monday (which coincides with the end of taping)."
And on December
16th (nine days after filming ended): "I saw Yau-Man
on Friday and he is visibly thinner and also
shaved his head."
And on December
22nd: "The picture posted ealier with the group who
has been blacked out are contestants not stand-ins. Yau-man
is one of` them (in the hat)."
|
December 4, 2006: Apparently new Sucks poster newbie02 brings
the following info to light:
"A director of IT at UC Berkeley is on this season's show. Yau-Man
Chan, 50's. He did not apply. They approached him
because is a N. CA division director of the National Collegiate
Table Tennis Association."
