| Know
someone who was a contestant on Survivor 16: Micronesia? |
|
|
| Contestant-related press and rumors |
January 5 , 2008: CBS eventually gets around
to putting up their Survivor: Micronesia site,
which includes James's completely unupdated bio (below):
"James SURVIVOR: CHINA
Age: 30
Home Town: Lafayette, LA
Occupation: Grave Digger
James Clement owns a burial service and he is a gravedigger.
In addition, he works security at nightclubs and weddings
and bartends on the side. His hobbies include watching television
and surfing the web. He enjoys sprinting, weight lifting
and playing football.
Clement describes himself as athletically
gifted, socially adaptive and physically attractive. He is
most proud of carrying on the family business. He feels he'll
do well because he considers himself to be physically and
mentally adept, adventurous and able to adapt to new environments
and situations.
Clement currently resides in Lafayette, Louisiana,
with his pit bull, Brently. His birth date is March 9, 1977."

January 3, 2008: Entertainment
Weekly (mostly Dalton Ross) handles the cast-release
chores for Survivor: Micronesia. Included is James's pre-show
interview and Probst's comments:
"THE RETURNING FAVORITES: JAMES CLEMENT
AGE: 30
SEASON: Survivor: China
JAMES SAYS: How has he altered his
strategy from last time? ''I'm going to have to hustle a
little bit more, and smile a whole lot earlier.''
JEFF PROBST
SAYS: ''I feel like the reason James is likable is there
is a sense of authenticity there that you don't see that
often — he's just going to tell you what he
thinks. I don't think James is that great of a Survivor player,
as we saw in China. He made, without question, the single
biggest blunder in the history of the show. I don't think
he gets how to play, but he's so strong and he works so hard
and he is so likable that it's really hard to vote him out.
I think James could do really well this season."

December 16, 2007: Following
his seventh-place finish on the show, won the $100,000 fan-voted
consolation prize for Survivor 15: China.

August 21, 2007: Local paper the Lafayette
Daily Advertiser looks into how James got on the show
(hint for multiple-applicants: it's all about who you know,
and if they know the casting people):
"Reality
series knocks again: Lafayette man makes final cut for
Survivor
Reed Dunn rdunn@theadvertiser.com
If you want to get on a reality show,
it would pay off to befriend someone who's been through it.
That's what
happened with James Clement, 30, of Lafayette, who CBS
announced Monday would join 15 others for the upcoming Survivor:
China. The show, now in its 15th season,
premieres Sept. 20. 'One of the girls who cast me asked if
I knew any interesting characters that might fit the
model they gave me,' said Lafayette's Kenward 'Boo' Bernis,
who made it to the finals on last season's series, Survivor:
Fiji. 'They loved his background story. He's a gravedigger
by trade.' Bernis said he and Clement played football
together at UL. They've known each other for about 10
years. 'I helped him make a video, and we sent it in,'
Bernis said.
Clement works part-time as a bartender and security
guard, according to the Survivor Web site. His
full-time profession is as a gravedigger, which Bernis
said certainly helped add interest to his character for
the show. 'People
freak out when they see the body on him,' Bernis added.
'There's not an ounce of fat on him. I'm bettin' money
right now he's going to get a modeling contract.' The upcoming season of Survivor begins
in downtown Shanghai and moves into the HuangPu Mountain's
Mi Tuo Temple, where contestants have to give up their
possessions. The cast then is split and relocated to
two separate islands. As with previous years, the tribes
will compete until one person is named the ultimate survivor,
winning the $1 million prize.
Bernis, who made it 37 days on the
island, said he shared little advice with Clement on
how to outwit and outlast the other castaways. 'I just
said the obvious,' he said. 'Just try to find somebody
you can trust and stick with that person.'"

August 20 , 2007: Jeff Probst's comments
(made sometime during the game), as told to Ileane Rudolph
of TV Guide, in their barely pre-cast reveal article:
"Jeff's take: He is without question
the biggest guy we've had on this show. He's actually a gentle
giant, a very decent guy who works extremely hard. But if you
rile him up, he'll let you know what he's thinking."

August 20, 2007: Officially revealed as a Survivor:
China contestant by CBS, as the cast is unceremoniously
dumped onto the CBS web site. From his official
CBS bio:
"James
Clement owns a burial service and works as a gravedigger.
In addition, he works security at nightclubs and weddings
and bartends on the side. His hobbies include watching
television and surfing the Web. He enjoys sprinting,
weight-lifting and playing football.

physically attractive. He is proudest of carrying on
the family business. He feels he'll do well because he
considers himself to be physically and mentally adept,
adventurous and able to adapt to new environments and
situations.
Clement currently resides in Lafayette,
Louisiana, with his pit bull, Brently. His birth date
is March 9, 1977."

August 13, 2007: A commenter
named "Chad" at SurvivorChina.net leaves the following statement
about James, in response to contestant names that apparently
came out of thin air, leaping directly to SurvivorChina.net's
brain:
"James? So who is the quiet Cajun from Louisiana? He is from
a small town and raised very old fashion with more heart than
you can imagine. I am sure everyone will see this for them
selves though. Yes he is a grave differ for all of those that
did not believe him."
