Contestant-related press and rumors
September 1, 2005 - "Judkins '05 to compete on 'Survivor: Guatemala'
The most recent addition to an elite group of Brown alums, Rafe Judkins '05 will soon be among reality TV vets Maggie Haskins '04 (ESPN's Dream Job) and Yaya Johnson '04 (UPN's America's Next Top Model) as a Brown alum-cum-TV contestant.
Judkins is about to join the burgeoning world of reality TV. He will compete on the next (and 11th, for the uninitiated) season of CBS's Survivor, where he will be one of 16 contestants flung into the Guatemalan wilderness to fend for - and compete against - themselves.
Most of the competition has already been taped, but the show premieres later this month.
As the Survivor motto goes, Judkins will try to 'outwit, outplay and outlast' the other 15 competitors. This season's theme is 'Guatemala: The Maya Empire,' and CBS's Survivor Web site features photos of the 16 castaways with Mayan ruins and sweltering jungle as a backdrop.
Judkins is a former Brown Outdoor Leadership Training manager, a concentrator in biology and anthropology, an ex-member of campus comedy troupe Out of Bounds, the founder of a campus cooking group and a longtime "Survivor" aficionado. Judkins is under strict contract with CBS not to talk about the show until he either is voted off the show or wins.
Sandy Stonesifer '06 was Judkins' BOLT co-leader last year. Stonesifer said Judkins is 'really engaged, energetic, and thoughtful.' She said she and Judkins decided to pretend their BOLT trip was a season of Survivor and secretly voted people off. She was quick to add that once they got to know the BOLT participants, they felt bad voting them off.
Stonesifer also said that Judkins is so deeply committed to his interest in nature that, as a memento, his favorite camping sweater has endured three years of BOLT wilderness trekking unwashed.
Landon Judkins '09, Rafe's brother, said Rafe 'has always been really competitive, of course,' and was such an enthusiast he hosted weekly Survivor parties to convert his friends into regular viewers. In high school, Landon said, a new senior superlative category was created just for Rafe: 'Most Likely to Be On Survivor.'
Landon also said Rafe studied abroad in Australia, during which time he made frequent jaunts into the Australian outback for hiking and camping.
Much of Judkins' biographical information can be gleaned on any of a number of Web sites, including CBS's own and the one Landon created for his brother, at www.rafejudkins.net. According to his personal Web site, for example, one of Judkins' ambitions is to move to Los Angeles and develop his passion for screenwriting.
For those interested in how Judkins fares, Survivor: Guatemala premieres Thursday, Sept. 15 at 8 p.m. Stonesifer said that above all, 'even if Rafe doesn't win Survivor, he is definitely going to provide some stellar entertainment.'"

August 16, 2005 - Rafe's brother, Landon Judkins, puts together a site dedicated to Rafe. While it's short on Survivor-related info (as you might expect), it does paint a fairly solid biographical picture of Rafe. Includes: a photo gallery and bio page, among other stuff. - LandonJudkins.net
August 12, 2005 - "People: Brown grad to be on Survivor: Guatemala
The Rhode Island connection to Survivor never seems to end.
CBS announced yesterday that Rafe Judkins, a 2005 Brown University graduate, is a contestant on the upcoming edition of the hit reality show. This one is called Survivor: Guatemala; it premieres Thursday, Sept. 15.
Judkins, 22, was born in Salt Lake City into a Mormon family that includes more than 60 first cousins, and moved to Pittsburgh when he was 5.
At Brown, he studied biology and anthropology. He also managed Brown's Outdoor Leadership Training program, which is designed to foster leadership skills, partly through a 'shared wilderness experience' with other students.
This should come in handy, since, according to CBS, the participants in Survivor: Guatemala experienced triple-digit heat, crocodile-infested waters, relentless mosquitos and the terrifying sounds of howler monkeys.
The show was shot in June and July."

- Pre-game interview transcript, taken from the CBS News site video, entitled: "Rafe The 'Gay Mormon'."

Rafe: - "Well, I'm a gay, Mormon, Ivy League grad, wilderness guide."
- "Mormons are so focused on family and caring for other people. And like there's so many things about the Mormon religion that I want to bring to my life. You know if, when I have a husband and kids, like I want us to have family home evening on Monday nights. Um, and like all get together and play board games, or whatever. You know I think that the, the Mormon Church has so much good that you can take from it."
- "I can interact really well with people, and, you know, like be emotional and understanding, and not have this macho thing that I need to stand up for. Not that all straight guys do, but, you know, a lot do have that kind of chip on their shoulder, and I don't have anything to prove out there. Um, but you can also, compete well in the challenges, and I can do a lot of work around camp. You know, you can take both of, like the best of both worlds, and use it in the game, so...."
- "I won't humiliate someone else, you know, in front of their family and the nation. I won't, you know, I'm only gonna do it, anything bad, if I absolutely have to. Um, to stay alive in the game. I'm not gonna, you know, go out there to be the bad guy, and to do cruel things to people just because I can. You know, I'm gonna try to play it as clean as I can."
- "I think the people who bother me the most are the people who aren't open to listening to and caring about others. Who have their own opinion, and they're going in there with their opinion. They're not changing it no matter what you say or do to, you know, prove them wrong. And, I think those people can be really, really frustrating to deal with. Um, I really hope there aren't any. [laughs] But I'm sure there will be."
- "People will underestimate me. Um, they're gonna look at me, and see that I'm friendly, that, you know, that I'm this gay guy that, you know, who's gonna, what, what damage can he do to anyone. Um, and they won't expect that I will probably be the smartest person out there, that I have a ton of outdoors experience, and that I really know how to play this game."

August 11, 2005 - Officially revealed as a Survivor: Guatemala contestant on the Early Show. - CBS Early Show site
July 21, 2005 - Spoiled as a contestant for Survivor Guatemala by SurvivorPhoenix.

"S11 Contestant - He has a rock named Charles: Rafe Judkins

We have received information which indicates that Rafe Judkins, a dashing blue-eyed red-head with an obsession for his pearly whites, is a contestant on the Maya Empire edition of Survivor. If the information is accurate, Rafe has a background that would make him an ideal contestant on Survivor.

The 22 year-old man, originally from Pittsburgh, was a Brown University member of the class of 2005. Rafe may also be a 2001 graduate of Sewickley Academy in Pennsylvania.

As a manager of Brown's Outdoor Leadership Training, Rafe would be familiar with the dynamics of intense living conditions with small groups of people in an outdoor environment. According to materials on its website, the program is designed to establish long-term support networks for students entering their sophomore year, beginning with a 5 day camping excursion for groups of 10 students each. The various skills taught during that outing could prove very useful on Survivor.
Being a Survivor may be a springboard for a career in screenwriting, for which Rafe has indicated interest in the past. In the Spring of 2003, he started working in the writing of an online Survivor game ran by Survivor-Central: Survivor Tonga. He was unable to finish it after leaving for Australia to study. Those involved in the game then are certain to give some feedback on the boards about that experience. The cached pages of that short-lived series can be found here and here.

According to Internet records, Rafe 'doesn't like vaginas', is apparently green-thumb challenged, and wants to meet Iron Chef Chen. He is currently in a relationship. While at Brown, Rafe was also a member of the sketch comedy group 'Out of Bounds'. If he manages to last long enough on the show, he could prove to be quite a memorable contestant."

2005 - Rafe's entry in the 2004-2005 Out of Bounds Roster:

"This picture is only for people who are googling me and don't care about Out of Bounds. Aren't my teeth white? Aren't my eyes blue? Whatever you're googling me for: the answer is YES.

Dossier:
* Freedom History: If I could be any dinosaur, I would be a dragon.
Insight Into My Being:
* I don't like vaginas. Or Herman Melville. Or Herbie the Love Bug for that matter. I do, however, enjoy Lindsay Lohan.
After A Show Someone Has Called Me This Because They Didn't Know My Real Name:
* He Said (of He Said, She Said)
* the Giant Clitoris
* Also, people with geographically untraceable accents."

2003 Rafe's bio from the online Survivor game, "Survivor Sri Lanka":

"PERSONAL BIO
If you could hold any political office, what would it be and why? I would want to be a supreme court judge, because you can make decisions more or less without influence by others, while in most every other political office, someone else is pulling the strings.

What types of people would you most like to be stranded with and why?
I would most like to be stranded with a group of honest, kind, funny people. That way, I wouldn't have to worry as much about them betraying me.

What types of people would you least like to be stranded with and why?
Someone like myself, who is incredibly nice, but also has a good head on their shoulders and isn't willing to sacrifice their own chances in the game for the benefit of others.

What skills would you bring to the game that would make you a valuable member of the tribe?: My knowledge of Anthropology and Biology makes me a valuable asset in the wilderness. I know a great deal about animals, and can use that knowledge to help make our camp strong, well-fed, and protected.

Why do you believe that you could be the Sole Survivor?
Because I combine the "sweetheart" qualities of Elisabeth with the machiavellian qualities of Richard Hatch. It's pretty much an unbeatable combo."
