| August 13, 2005 | - Local boy makes
good! (Well, if being a contestant on reality TV can be considered good): "Newton to appear on CBS' 'Survivor' Douglas native Jamie Newton, 24, has been chosen as a cast member in the latest installment of the CBS hit reality show Survivor. CBS announced the cast for Survivor: Guatemala Thursday morning on the The Early Show. Newton and 15 other contestants will be vying for $1 million in prize money on the show. Verna Sistare, Newton’s mother, said that he moved from Douglas four years ago to attend Central Missouri State University where he received a degree in finance and wrestled on the wrestling team. Sistare said he moved to Los Angeles, Calif., after graduating from Central Missouri, where he has been pursuing a career in modeling. 'Hopefully, doing Survivor will give him some exposure that will help further his modeling career,' she said. In addition to modeling, Newton has appeared as an extra in several television programs. Sistare said that filming Survivor was a grueling process for her son. 'During filming, he learned what endurance and perseverance are all about,' she said. If Survivor doesn't lead to bigger and better things, Newton always has that finance degree to fall back on. 'He told me if he didn't have a job in a year, he would find use his degree,' she said. Newton also has a twin brother, Raymie." |

transcript, taken from the CBS News site video, entitled:
"Jamie: A Baby with Teeth." Jamie:
- "I think Georgia guys are so special, because uh they open doors
for ladies, and the accent. They're just, uh, sweet as pie, I guess
you could say."- "I was on All My Children, for an episode. Because uh, they had a contest, 'Sexiest Man in America.' The fusion thing. And uh, I was lucky enough to get third." - "I wrestled, in high school. And college. I played sports all my life. But if I can make top eight in this, that's what we consider All-American. That's my goal, to be top eight in this Survivor game. This is the ultimate challenge. Dealing with other people. I made it this far, so I feel like I'm in the national finals right now." - "I'm one of the babies in the group, but uh, I want everybody to know this baby has its teeth. And I'll bite somebody." - "I think I'll stand out in this competition because, you know, I'm crazy, I'll do anything. I'll bite a crocodile if it takes me to get a million dollars. If that's what it means for me to be able to take care of my mom, then I'll do it." - "I'm a sexy guy, who knows how to talk to women. Yay-uh! Ha ha!" - "The thing that angers me most is fake people. People that just aren't themselves, just trying to be somebody they're not. Poseurs, if you would. I hate that." |

A chilling vision of things to come: "Sexy man: Student gets national media attention Jamie Newton, senior finance major at Central, has recently been getting media attention. He has become a finalist in the Sexiest Man in America Contest. Newton came to Central from Douglas, Ga. and is now a member of Central's wrestling team. He began his journey into the public light after a vacation to Panama City. He found a Tommy Hilfiger store giving away free sandals. While getting the sandals, Jamie ran into two scouts from the company who asked him if he wanted to model. Newton gave the scouts his number. "I didn't think they were going to call, but they did," Newton said. He was given the chance to model for the company and as he was on the catwalk, representatives from the Sexiest Man Contest noticed him. Newton took the opportunity to join the Contest and was flown to New York City, where he competed with 24 other men for the prize - an appearance on the weekday soap "All My Children." The contest split the men into five groups. Each week, America voted on which one they liked. Jamie was in week four and was voted as the sexiest guy in that group. In the contest, Jamie was judged on four categories: appearance, presentation, energy/excitement and on-air appeal. Newton says the hardest to overcome was on-air appeal. "[Being] live on air was scary, but people were saying that the camera loves me and I was believing it," Newton says. So how does one determine a sexy man? "I guess sexy means a nice guy who always open doors for ladies and puts his mom first," Newton says. "I think that's pretty sexy." With all the recent attention, certain things have changed for Newton. "People whispered and pointed at a party, and a girls came up, but that's the first time that happened," Newton says, " I think it is funny and flattering." Newton, who also has a twin brother in Georgia named Ramie, says his brother is also getting a lot of attention. Other benefits of Newton's experience is modeling can pay $1200 a day. However, Newton says that he is very humble and would like to use his brain instead of his looks. He also says if he does win, he does not expect to be on the show again because he has an accent and doesn't speak well. Newton says some benefits also included the opportunity to appear on "The View" with Clipse singing in the background and meeting Star Jones. Newton plans on working in the area of investment and sales after he graduates. He may do some part-time modeling after he graduates and he would also like to make a portfolio. Newton also says that he doesn't really believe in love at first sight but attraction at first sight. He likes talking to people and he loves people in general. Newton is more content on the end of the contest. Since he has made it as a finalist, he is waiting for the end to see who wins. The voting for the winner takes place the first week in September. According to abc.com, the winner will be announced on or about Sept. 8 live on the air." |
